The English Speaking Section of the Multicultural Centre Rhodes (The ‘English School’)

The Multicultural Centre of Rhodes (S.P.O.R.) is a multicultural association for bi-lingual children. The English-Speaking Section comes under its umbrella and provides English lessons for bi-lingual children who come from a home where English is spoken as a native language/mother tongue and where the member parent holds a passport of an English-speaking country. The association and its lessons are non-profit making (it is NOT a ‘frontisterio’).

The school accepts students from five years old (kindergarten) until eighteen. Language development in younger children is fostered through play and arts and crafts, where the objective is to promote better verbal fluency in English. For older children reading and writing skills are addressed, based around the the educational values and culture of the British Isles and other English-speaking countries. All children read novels and stories appropriate for their age group and literacy skills are developed through a wide range of general knowledge topics that will prepare them for their adult life. On completing their progress through the English Section, bilingual teenagers leave the centre confident in their fluency and their ability to slot straight into higher education in English should that be their choice.

The students are encouraged to stay in touch with their English-speaking culture through events and activities such as Halloween, Christmas and Easter parties, jumble sales, sports day picnics etc. Parents are expected and required to be involved and take an active interest in the centre, participating in the various activities and contributing to them. The fundraising events are particularly important as they enable the assocation to keep tutorial costs as low as possible.
