Rhodes Animal Welfare Society (RAWS)

The Rhodes Animal Welfare Society, known as RAWS, is a non-profit making society dedicated to helping sick, injured and maltreated animals and also to raise awareness amongst the Rhodian community regarding animal care and welfare.  The society relies on charitable donations to carry out their valuable work.  These kind-hearted people cook, feed, clean up the cages, do the laundry, look after the sick animals, handle visitors, make and take telephone calls, pick-up animals, do all the relevant paperwork and much, much more...

The volunteers provide food for the many colonies of stray cats and dogs that have been left to starve when there are no friendly residents or tourists there to feed them.  They are sponsored by the Greek Animal Welfare Fund, along with the Municipality of Rhodes Town, and have in recent years been associated with the RSPCA and WSPA in the UK.  They are a living and breathing example of the way in which animal welfare groups - and their dedicated volunteers - are constantly struggling with a multitude of problems and trying to make the local authorities aware that the problem of strays is also  a public one.

Every donation, large or small, is greatly appreciated and remember.... if it was not for all the supporters RAWS would not exist and all the animals that have been helped over the years would have found no relief from their suffering.  If you would like to make a donation, or have any animal problems to report, you can contact them at their information desk at Mandraki harbour (just behind the taxi rank), or at their premises in the Tsairi area on the Lindos road, opposite the army base and the LTU (look for the small sign).  Collection boxes can be found in some hotels and bars. The shelter in Tsairi is open to the public daily from 10am until 1pm.
