The English School Christmas Party will be held at the school on Sunday 11th December at 4pm. Entrance is €2.00 per child including a free drink. Please also bring a plate of food (ideally not cheese pies!). There will be Christmas music (you know you love it really), fun and games, a raffle, refreshments and a visit from you-know-who (no, not Lord Voldemort). For the latter please wrap a small gift marked with the child's name and age and hand it in on entrance.

Raffle prize donations are now being collected at the school - please give generously. Assistance is required on the day to decorate etc - please contact Sharon Patsi if you can help out. These parties are essential to the school as it is a self-funding, non-profit making organisation and relies on the money from fundraising events.

Professional photographers will set up a Christmas themed backdrop for when the children receive their present from Santa: The cost of the photos (printed size 15x20cm) will be €3.50, to be paid in advance. A normal backdrop will also be available for anyone who wants a family or individual portrait taken.

Children who do not attend the school are welcome - the more the merrier. The address is Emporiko Kentro Panagou, George Seferi St - just down from Mikes.

The festival's aims are to:
- teach people, especially young children, about the proper care of pets
- inform any interested parties how they can adopt a stray dog or cat
- bring together animal lovers of the island
- strengthen efforts to sterilize and vaccinate stray animals.
At the festival you can meet a few (of many) stray puppies looking for homes, giving you the chance to see them up close (please do not bring dogs because space at the centre is limited).

Children will have the opportunity to paint and have fun while learning what we do and what we do with animals.

There will be a small bazaar - funds raised will be donated to Rhodes Animal Welfare Society to neuter and vaccinate stray animals.

A draw will take place towards the end of the festival and there will be gifts for our four-legged roommates!

Asterix is coming to Rhodes... There will be an exhibition celebrating 50 years of the comics featuring the little Gaulish warrior at the French 'Inn' on the Street of the Knights in the Old Town of Rhodes. The exhibition will run from Saturday 10th July until Friday 30 July. Personally I've been a fan since I was a kid, and even now I find the comics, which can be bought at many peripteros, an invaluable aid in learning Greek - although having said that you don't get many opportunities to use phrases such as 'μαγικό ζωμό' ('magic potion'), 'αγριογουρούνι' ('wild boar') and 'αuτοί οι Ρομαιοι ειναι τρελοί' ('these Romans are crazy...').

Residency Permits

We've had a few queries recently regarding residency permits and whether they are still required for EU nationals. The official answer is 'Yes': The cream Registration Certificate (Veveosi Engrafis) which replaces the old blue Residence Permit is obligatory after you've been in Greece for more than three months. It is open-dated and therefore will not need renewal. There is more information (courtesy of the British Consul) if you click on the header above.

One problem is that local police stations where you should apply for them seem to be unaware of this requirement and there have been instances of people being turned away because the "certificates are no longer needed". If any British national needs a certificate and has trouble obtaining one they should contact the British Consul who will speak to the chief of police on their behalf.

Before you all go rushing off at once to the local police station (something I doubt the coppers will thank me for!), you will really only need the certificate if you wish to purchase certain items such as a car or motorbike (but not a house apparently). On the other hand it is a requirement and you never know when you might need one (they can take a while to come through) so we do recommend you get one.

One of the downsides of living in Rhodes is not being able to recycle as much as we would like: The environmental and economic cost of transporting materials to the mainland is often prohibitive.

However on Saturday 23rd January from 11:00-14:00 there will be a paper collection organisied by Creative Pioneers at Korakonero Sports Centre just outside Rhodes town. The facility is only available for the date and hours in question because there are no storage facilities and materials have to be loaded in the working hours of the transport company.

Any materials to be recycled should be packaged in bundles or boxes.

As a taster for the next quiz here are some of the questions from the previous quiz. I'll put the answers up after the next one. If you get them all right then that's pretty good going as I think they're quite hard, but remember its a team game: Each individual only needs to contribute a couple of answers to get a winning score...

The International Association will be holding the 22nd annual Rodini Bazaar on Saturday 28th November at 17.00.

The Rodini christmas bazaar is held annually and is supported by various nationalities who make and collect beautiful traditional christmas items to sell and raise money for local charities.

We would also like to have 'special' raffle prizes from local businesses... in the past we've had; a trip to Symi, dance lessons, weekend villa, horse riding to name but a few...

We also need volunteers! Are you able to spend a few mornings to join our 'crafty' crew creating or sewing? Are you able to bake cakes/biscuits/shortbread/scones/flapjacks/jam tarts/mince pies/gingerbread men etc?! Have you recently made jam/ marmalade/pickled onions?!!

Donations can be given to:

Miss Tina at the English school Mon and Wed 3-7.20 pm amd Fri 3.30-5.30 pm. Tel: 22410 86438.

Suzanne: At the English school Tue and Thu 3pm or 4.15 pm. Tel: 22410 38979.

By October 2009 everyone, regardless of nationality, living and working in Greece will be required to have an ‘AMKA’ or social security number. This number is for everyone regardless of whichever health insurance you currently pay into (ie IKA, TEBE etc).

Effectively this will put everyone on a national register and the aim is to reduce lengthy bureaucratic procedures involving reams of paperwork being shuffled from one bewildered office to another. The best thing about it is that its also easy to get one (are you still standing up?!). Take your passport into your nearest KEP office and ask for it! If you have children you will need to supply birth certificates (translated and stamped if they were born outside Greece) which are also obtainable from the KEP office, otherwise these are obtainable from your local municipality building. If you are already in the system and have an active and accurate mail address you may even receive your AMKA card in the post.

If you would like to read more about AMKA they have a website: http://www.amka.gr/index.html which is in greek but you can get it translated by your google toolbar, providing a very literal and wacky translation, but you will get the gist!

With increasing numbers of Britons retiring, and planning to retire abroad, Age Concern England & Help The Aged is initiating a project under its Older Persons Retiring Abroad Programme to produce information sheets available on the internet to the most popular retirement destinations, of which Greece is one. The aim is to provide retirees planning to move to a particular country with sufficient, easily accessible information to enable them to make an informed decision on whether to go ahead with their plans. We hope this will also prevent the occurrence of the type of recent tragic cases of retirees abroad ending up in great difficulties. While there are many sources of general information for people planning to retire abroad, there is a lack of country-specific guides. One of the best sources of information on retiring to Greece is people who have already retired there. Would you be willing to help us by filling in a questionnaire? If so please choose one and follow the links below. Thank you.

S.P.O.R. has held an 'eco fair' for the last four years - the name of the event has changed to reflect the multicultural nature of our organization but the objectives remain the same: To initiate an enjoyable community-based event at the International School and to raise funds for S.P.O.R.'s running costs. Last years event was also held at the International School and was very successful.

Inside the building there will be a range of children's activities - last year they included face painting, making jewellery, rock painting, bag printing/painting and candle-making. There will also be a lottery and a cafeteria selling food and drinks.

Outside there will be a 'Wheel of Fortune' and a 'jumble sale' area in the opposite car park. If anyone is interested in selling, contact Anna on 22410 96473. Stand space costs 5€ for a two metre space (you will need to bring your own table). Charities can exhibit for free. Note that only food amnd drink which CANNOT be consumed on site may be sold i.e. pots of jam or single large cakes are OK, snacks are not. In the event of bad weather, every effort will be made to accommodate the stands inside.

There will also be an outdoor stage for various performances by singers and dancers.
